Gerald's life began on December 21, 1929 in Buchanan, the son of Richard and Helen (Wallace) McCoy. He was a 1949 graduate of Dowagiac Central High School. Gerald served his country in the United States Army during the Korean War. He lived on the family farm established in 1863 for most of his life.
